1Bad product from a bad company
By Christopher Beaugrand
After suffering with this product for almost 6 months now, I wanted to warn any prospective buyer to stay far away. This is a long review, but I would like people to understand why I am being so negative about it.Summary:The molding itself is decent quality, but the rest of the FocalPoint mounting accessories are junk. The molding is designed at a non-standard spring angle, so you cannot use typical cutting angels to cut the corners. FocalPoint does not supply correct cutting angles for all of their molding.FocalPoint support is non-existent. They lied to me over the phone more than once and never, ever returned any phone calls when they promised to (I was promised at least 6 times that someone would call me back).Details:First, a little about my project: I am fairly good at DIY projects. I have put up traditional crown molding before with a compound miter saw and a nail gun and it looked great. I actually got complements from a contractor that I knew. This project was supposed to be a simple weekend deal, four walls, 10x12 room, 90 degree corners. My wife and I thought we'd save money and time with the FocalPoint products. We couldn't have been more wrong. At first, we purchased just the pieces of 8-foot molding. When they arrived, the instructions let us know that we should use the FocalPoint mounting system. The FocalPoint website said specifically that we could purchase these at any Home Depot store. We visited 3 of our closest stores, and called 2 more - and none of them had ever heard of FocalPoint and didn't carry any of their products. So, we purchased the mounting brackets from Amazon. They were terrible. They were so poorly made that at least 1 and usually 2 from each package were so badly bent out of shape that they were unusable. This was not a shipping problem, this was a manufacturing defect. They also didn't come with mounting screws. The instructions were badly written and suggested using totally inappropriate screws. But, I mounted the brackets every 12" or so as suggested. Up to now, there had been some annoyances, but the real problem started when I got ready to cut the molding. As anyone that has done crown before knows, you have to either make a miter box, or use a compound miter saw to get the corners to work. Well, I had done this before, so I thought - no problem. The pieces of molding didn't come with instructions, so I used the standard angles that I had used previously and cut a few pieces. Well, they didn't fit together at all. What I found out was that the FocalPoint molding and brackets are not at a standard spring angle, so none of the various tables and charts of cutting angles will work. I searched the company website and found, buried, a chart of angles for their molding - great! Well, no, it didn't have any numbers for the molding I had purchased. I called the company 4 times and left messages with the only person that they would let me speak to - no-one ever called me back with angles. The fifth time I was insistent, and they transferred me to the line of the person who could give me the cutting angles. Their email was on their outgoing voicemail. I left them a voicemail and email - still no response. Finally, on the next call, I got the angles from the receptionist - apparently I was not the only one calling about this particular item. Well, the cutting angles she gave me were wrong. I had now cut a measurable amount off of a few pieces of molding, and if I made any more incorrect cuts, I wouldn't have enough molding to complete the job. I was finally able to get in touch with the person at FocalPoint that is responsible for figuring out the angles, and he told me he would go into the shop and figure out what angles I would need to use. I should call him back in a week or so. I called him every Monday morning for 4 weeks, and each time he said he hadn't gotten around to it yet.I finally got really frustrated (nearly 3 months had passed since the beginning of the project), and decided to just use the corner blocks that FocalPoint want you to use with this molding. I purchased 4 blocks, painted them, and put them up. They look terrible. They are not specific to any one molding, so they don't match at all. I used the exact same paint as the molding, but the plastic texture of the corner blocks looked completely different from the texture of the molding. After putting up just one corner, my wife thought it was terrible and told me to take it all down. We contacted FocalPoint and left them a detailed message describing this process, and gave them 2 weeks to respond to us so that we could make it right. As I had expected, no-one ever got back to us.Amazon was extremely helpful through this entire process, and I cannot fault them for anything that has happened. FocalPoint however, acted terribly and I would never, ever do business with them again or buy any of their products. We are actually going to be contacting their local BBB.

Love this stuff! Our whole house is nearly complete with this and it was so easy to use! It looks awesome and the cuts are simple and we love the pieces that go on corners, ends and in the middle that really make it look awesome- we get so many compliments from people on our crown moulding. We are DIY'ers but I have to admit beginners. This is a really easy system to work with- even for beginners. You really can't mess it up in my opinion. I have two more rooms to accomplish!
